Greetings, Delegates and Model United Nations Directors.
It is our pleasure to welcome you to the first annual Cleveland International Model United Nations Conference, CLEIMUN15, from Friday, October, 23rd to Sunday, October 25th, 2015. CLEIMUN, a joint venture between St. Edward High School (SEHS) and the Cleveland Council of World Affairs (CCWA), aims to be one of the leading Model UN experiences in North America. Both SEHS & CCWA have extensive Model UN experience. In recent years SEHS has sent delegates to numerous domestic conferences and to premier international conferences as well (which include yearly trips to THIMUN in the Netherlands and Haileybury MUN in the UK).
Leadership
The CCWA has run conferences throughout Northeast Ohio since the year of the inception of the United Nations in 1945 and continues to be a leading authority on international affairs in Greater Cleveland. The Chair of the CLEIMUN Board of Control, Mr. Michael Perrins, has extensive Model UN experience as the former Director of Politics at Haileybury College where he led the Haileybury MUN into becoming the largest secondary school Model United Nations conference in the United Kingdom. Altogether, CLEIMUN hopes to establish the precedent for a world class, international secondary school Model United Nations experience in the Greater Cleveland area to continue for many years to come.
Theme & Committees
The theme of CLEIMUN15 will be “A World Connected”. This theme represents the connection between the delegates and their nations, the schools in attendance, and many of the questions debated during committee time. The committees of CLEIMUN15 will be:
- Disarmament and International Security
- Ecology and Environment
- Economic and Social
- Human Rights
- Political
- The Security Council.
Each committee will have between 30 and 50 delegates from a wide array of nations, whilst the Security Council will have the fifteen delegates (of designated countries). If demand persists, committee sizes will be gladly enlarged to a manageable number to welcome the largest number of delegates possible (minus the Security Council which will remain at fifteen delegates). The committee chairs and co-chairs are currently working hard to prepare their committees for the best debate possible.
Conference
CLEIMUN15 will be a comprehensive conference including such aspects as: an Approvals Panel (for pre-prepared Draft Resolutions), a General Assembly, Press Team, designated ICT space in addition to on-site Wi-Fi connections (as all papers will be available to delegates online during the conference), Hotel and Transportation arrangements, Friday evening entertainment, and a Saturday evening Delegate’s Dance. We are striving to ensure that CLEIMUN15 will run at the international standard we wish to achieve to ensure the best experience possible not only for delegates and Model UN directors, but also our team, supporters, and any other visitors at CLEIMUN15.
Regardless if you are new to Model United Nations, if you are Model UN veteran, if you come from Greater Cleveland, from another state, or from another country, I encourage you to be one of the first CLEIMUN attendees. Going into our final year of high school, we speak from personal experience when we say that Model UN has been one of the favorite aspects of our high school careers and we hope for you to gain the same appreciation and enjoyment from Model UN as we do. This conference will only grow in future years to become what we hope will develop into a premier secondary school Model United Nations conference, with the ultimate goal of becoming the first Model United Nations Conference in the United States to gain THIMUN affiliation.
We invite you to continue to browse this website to learn more about this amazing opportunity. If you have any questions, comments, or would like to register for this conference then please go to contact section of this page to send us an email.
“A World Connected” starts with you. We would greatly enjoy your attendance at CLEIMUN15 in October and look forward to hearing from you personally.
See you in October,
Gregory Margevicius and Christopher Sekerak
Secretaries-General and Presidents of the General Assembly of CLEIMUN15
